Welcome to The Sisters at This Land!

These tiny houses are pretty as a picture and just half a mile from Philpott Lake, the unsung gem of southwestern Virginia. Each with her own amenities, Rosie and Rosalita offer a perfect vacation rental getaway for couples or friends who want to hike, kayak, and fish all day, then retreat to their own private spaces for R&R. A spacious covered deck gives guests refuge from the elements. Come on down and try tiny!

Unit A, Rosalita, is a 10x20 tiny house on wheels that feels much more spacious than its square footage, with big windows and lots of light. The front sitting room/kitchenette provides a mini fridge, cast iron single burner, coffee maker, and unique bar counter made from rough-sawn hardwood. Shelves made from repurposed snowboards complete a unique look. An electric fireplace keeps the room toasty and cozy in the winter, without the pesky smoke.

The full bathroom closes with a beautiful antique barn door. The spacious 36” galvanized steel shower gives guests of all sizes plenty of room, and a bucket sink adds a whimsical farmhouse touch.

Finally, guests can look out from their queen bed through a picture window to a gorgeous view of the forest and the mountains in the distance.

Unit B, Rosie, is an 8x20 THOW that has been featured in Tiny House Magazine and numerous YouTube channels. It was a labor of love for builder Chris Strathy - his first tiny house - and you can tell from all the thoughtful touches, like the gorgeous reclaimed wood floor salvaged from a tobacco barn.

Rosie’s kitchenette includes a cast iron double burner, full-size refrigerator, coffee maker, and microwave/convection oven, so guests can cook just about anything they can imagine. There’s even cabinet space to store your groceries and a fold-down table for eating or extra counter space.

Climb a couple of steps into the bedroom, with a queen bed and glass French doors looking out onto the distant mountains. Rosie even has her own balcony for breakfast in the open air or drinks before bed.

The bathrooms are fully stocked with towels, starter toilet paper, and basic necessities. We’re in the country, and the Sisters are on a septic system, so please don’t flush paper towels, sanitary products, baby wipes, or anything but toilet paper (and, you know)!

Fair warning: The Sisters DO NOT have a TV - please let us know if youd like one provided for your stay. There is a decent cell wifi hotspot/router. You can check your email and socials but don’t count on gaming or streaming heavily out here. US Cellular and Verizon get the best reception; AT&T, not so much. So come prepared to cut the cord (figuratively speaking) - it’s a great place to sweat out your tech withdrawal.

Don’t worry, though. You’ll have some books and games to keep you occupied and enjoying each other’s company.

The Sisters aren’t twins, but they have the same dad - Chris Strathy, the Capable Carpenter, well-known in the tiny house community for his individualistic and creative designs. Whether you’re a tiny house lover, or just looking for something different for your outdoor experience, The Sisters at This Land have a lot to offer!

Outdoor Space

Rosie and Rosalita are connected by a 10x20 covered wood deck with chairs, rockers, and a built-in bar. With its clear roof, the deck stays bright in the daytime, and string lights create a sweet atmosphere at night.

As of July 2021, Virginia is cannabis-friendly (for adults 21 and over) and so are we! Just keep it outside (smoking inside will cost you an extra cleaning fee).

Getting around

The nearest towns are Bassett, Martinsville, and Rocky Mount. Fairystone State Park and the Philpott Dam are just 20-30 minutes away. The Sisters - two tiny house vacation rentals - are located near several stops on the Crooked Road, Virginia's old-time and bluegrass Heritage Music Trail. The Blue Ridge Institute and Farm Museum, the Floyd Country Store, and the legendary Rocky Mount Dairy Queen - the only Dairy Queen with a regular bluegrass jam - are just a short drive through some magnificent mountain roads. The city of Roanoke is an hour away, just up Highway 220 for restaurants, events, and urban amenities.
