Jens Nielson was a religious immigrant from the island of Laaland, Denmark. He, along with his family, emigrated to the United States in 1856 and joined the ill-fated Willie Handcart Company headed for the Salt Lake Valley. The company was struck by an early winter and suffered many fatalities due to cold and starvation. Among the dead were his only son Jens (age six) and Bodil Mortenson a young girl that was traveling with the family. After reaching the Salt Lake Valley, Jens founded several communities in southern Utah including Cedar City and Bluff. Where he built this beautiful rock house that is now fully upgraded with modern amenities to make your stay completely enjoyable.
