Of course everyone visiting Skiathos in Greece comes for the typical island fun: warm sunny weather, lush green vegetation, beautiful sandy beaches with crystal clear blue water, boat rides, its wonderfully laid back and friendly locals, and great food.
And yet the island offers at least one more fun thing to do: go to the movies! In the middle of the village main street, you will find the inconspicuous entrance to an open-air theatre. Once you have your tickets and walk up the incline, you will find your self in a very large, walled space filled with rows of chairs facing a huge screen. There are remnants of the old roof and the broken beams no one feels the need to remove. Pick a seat - preferably one of the many with a table attached - and head for the bar in the back to stock up on soda, wine or beer, popcorn, hot dogs or candy.
Settle in to enjoy one of the latest films, while the moon rises and seagulls and swallows swoop across the screen.
For a special night out, watch “Mamma Mia”, the ABBA musical, and get swept up in the singing and dancing party that invariable breaks out at the first note. Even for non-ABBA fans, a fun and worthwhile evening, thanks to the lively atmosphere and the amazing cinematography featuring Skiathos in the staring role, which put the island on the map once and for all.
